Welcome

Welcome to All Around Us Blog. This is an exciting new concept we are trying. We hope you will enjoy and take advantage of the websites and looking into what your child is learning in their class.

Natural Resources

This week in are unit we will be exploring different opportunities to save our natural resouces. Parents be looking for opportunities in the blog to be able to help out.


Oil and natural gas are naturally occurring chemicals that are made up of just two elements -- carbon and hydrogen. The class of chemicals based on carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons.

Today, our way of life and standard of living,all depends on electric power!
Electricity happens when the balancing force between protons and electrons (basic elements of every atom) is upset by an outside force; electrons in the atoms transmit an electrical charge through solid matter (such as metal) to produce an Electrical Current.

Solar energy just means energy (light or heat) that comes from the sun. There are as many different ways to use solar energy as you have ideas in your head. What gets you hot lying on the beach on a summer day? Solar energy. What gets your car hot when it's parked in the sun with the windows closed? Solar energy. What makes your solar calculator go? Solar energy. What makes the giant solar panels on satellites work? Solar energy. What makes plants grow? Rain and... solar energy. What makes the clouds that make the rain? You got it! Solar energy. What sets a blade of glass under a magnifying glass on fire? Yup, solar energy. And on and on.

Water Cycle

This week we are learning about the Water Cycle and will be possibly going on a field trip to the weather station so be looking for the permission slip to sign. I hope that this blog is helping everyone out.


Run and get a glass of water and put it on the table next to you. Take a good long look at the water. Now -- can you guess how old it is?

The water in your glass may have fallen from the sky as rain just last week, but the water itself has been around pretty much as long as the earth has!
When the first fish crawled out of the ocean onto the land, your glass of water was part of that ocean. When the Brontosaurus walked through lakes feeding on plants, your glass of water was part of those lakes. When kings and princesses, knights and squires took a drink from their wells, your glass of water was part of those wells.

The earth has a limited amount of water. That water keeps going around and around and around and around and (well, you get the idea) in what we call the "Water Cycle".

This cycle is made up of a few main parts:

evaporation (and transpiration)
condensation
precipitation
collection

Plants

It's time to tear apart and get right into are Plant Unit. Each part of a plant has a very important function. All plants produce flowers for the same reason: to make seeds so another plant can grow.

Plants Parts:

Leaves: These are the parts of the plant where food is made by photosynthesis. Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air, water
from the soil, and energy from the sunlight. During photosynthesis, the leaves use light energy to change carbon dioxide and water into food. (sugar)
Flowers: These are the reproductive parts of a plant. Flower petals and the flowers smell attract insects and bees to pollinate the flower. After pollination, the petals fall off and seeds develop in the part of a flower called the ovary. The ovary itself usually becomes what we call the fruit.
Stems: These support the upper parts of plants. Water and dissolved nutrients from the soil travel up the stem in a system of tubes. Food from the leaves travel down stems to the roots. Stems also store food for the plant.
Roots: These anchor plants in the soil. Water and minerals are taken from the soil through the roots. Many plants such as carrots, store food in their roots.
Seeds: these contain a tiny embryo of a plant inside. The seed halves contain food which supplies energy and materials for growth until the plant grows its first leaves above the ground.

During my morning meeting, I have someone go to the window and check the weather out. While they're heading out there, we sing this song=) Hope this is something you like!
